RIRIE — Highway 26 near Ririe is currently closed as the Idaho Department of Fish and Game are moving a large herd of elk across the road.
Workers with Fish and Game, Idaho State Police and the Idaho Transportation Department are diverting traffic as some 100 elk cross highway from a private field toward the Texas Creek Wildlife Management Area.
The elk had wandered into private fields and near roads near Ririe, according to Idaho Fish and Game spokesman Gregg Losinski.
“This type of activity happens every few years,” Losinski tells EastIdahoNews.com. “We are not doing winter feeding because the elk don’t need it but we did use some feed to help lure them back to their natural habitat.”
Motorists are asked to use caution at all times because of unpredictable wildlife movements.
