IDAHO FALLS — Action movies and TV shows are packed with high speed chases with speeds surpassing 100 mph and numerous accidents and collisions with the public. If popular media is to be believed, police enter into high speed chases at the slightest provocation.
But in reality, during real car chase situations, authorities are very methodical and careful in their approach to dealing with fleeing cars. Bonneville County Sheriff Sgt. Jeff Edwards said safety is always the main emphasis considered by police.
On Tuesday a high speed chase in Idaho Falls ended with police ramming the vehicle of Ramiro Meza Jr. into a fence and power pole on Sunnyside Road. Edwards said this chase was by the books. During the pursuit, the chase was begun, discontinued, reestablished and ultimately concluded with an arrest – all within department guidelines and in the process, the public was protected.
EastIdahoNews.com Reporter Mark Richardson interviewed Edwards and Idaho Falls Police Chief Mark McBride about car chase procedures. Listen to the interviews in the clip above.
