RIGBY — It housed the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Jail for nearly 70 years, but the old building is no more.

Crews spent this week tearing down the facility on Main Street. It was built in 1939 and was used until 2007, when the county constructed a new law enforcement complex.

The old Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Jail was built in 1939.

After the sheriff’s office transitioned into the new building, Rigby city police used the old facility for a period of time. Then Liberty Montessori School moved in.

Crews spent several days this week tearing down the old building. The concrete was heavily reinforced so heavy equipment was needed to demolish the facility.

Many have mixed emotions about seeing the old building come down.

“It’s always bittersweet to see historical buildings town down,” Jefferson County Sheriff Detective Sam Tower tells EastIdahoNews.com. “I have a lot of memories in that building.”

The property is now privately owned, and future plans for the space have not been announced.
