BANNOCK COUNTY – Eastern Idaho is in high fire danger, the Idaho Falls District Bureau of Land Management said Wednesday.

In addition, a fire ban is in place in Bannock County. The county commissioners unanimously passed a resolution Wednesday that prohibits open fires and lighting fireworks. This only applies to unincorporated areas of the county. The ban does not include propane or charcoal barbecue grills, burn barrels and designated fire pits.

It will be in place until further notice. Violation of the ban is a misdemeanor and could result in criminal and civil penalties.

When the BLM declared eastern Idaho to be in high fire danger, it encouraged people to check for restrictions in their area before burning or lighting fireworks. The Caribou-Targhee National Forest is in moderate fire danger, but “it is important to practice the same care with fire while on the forest lands” as well, the BLM said.

Fireworks are prohibited on lands in Idaho managed by both agencies.
