VICTOR — The city of Victor will not consider an application for a new Broulim’s Fresh Foods in Victor, after the company decided to withdraw it.

“We feel your zoning conditions require a business in this zone to offer a limited variety of high priced items as may be required in the middle of a large resort area with very limited space and a large number of people,” wrote Broulim’s Vice President Mark Oswald in a letter to the city.

The company was asking for the city to rezone a piece of the proposed site at 7895 S. Highway 33 and 382 N. Agate, from residential to commercial. The city’s planning and zoning commission had earlier denied the rezone application, but the city was scheduled to hold a public hearing on the rezone Sept. 14. The hearing was canceled after the company withdrew the application.

However, the company didn’t cite the P&Z decision, but rather the zoning for most of the building site, called commercial corridor. Broulim’s had at first intended to ask the city to change the zoning of most of the site to “heavy commercial.”

The company then redesigned the store to work in “commercial corridor” zoning. Oswald said the company redesigned the plan in response to public feedback, but acknowledged the changes would make the project more difficult.

Oswald said this withdrawal does not mean that the idea of a Broulim’s Victor is dead. He said the company will look for a more appropriate site in the city.

He also said he appreciated the efforts of city staff, appreciated working with them, remarking, “and we hope to do that in a better fashion in the future.”
