IDAHO FALLS — Dog lovers and their mutts competed in the 8th annual Snake River Animal Shelter Mutt Strut this weekend.
Owners were a allowed to run, walk or strut during a 1K, 5K, or 10K race. The event was held to raise money for the newly opened Snake River Animal Shelter.Years of planning and fundraising have gone into the Snake River Animal Shelter. At least $1 million had to be raised prior to its opening on Aug. 11.
The Mutt Strut was the first event the shelter has held since it opened.
Wray Landon, member of the board of directors, said that they are focusing on saving the lives of animals who may have otherwise been stray or abandoned.
“It brings some visibility to the needs of the animals in this community,” Landon said, “It also brings visibility to what the shelter is doing in terms of saving the lives of animals.”
The event was a great way for people to spend time with their pets and also to promote adoption.
“I’ve been in Eastern Idaho for five and a half years, and I’ve done it every year that I can remember,” participant Sandi Gordon said.
“We’ve kind of been doing marathons through the summer and we wanted to do this one specifically because it benefited animals, and dogs,” said Rexburg resident Julie Knight, “They use the money more for the animals, and I like that.”
Along with the adoption program, the Snake River Animal Shelter offers training classes and vaccination for shelter animals.
