REXBURG — Hundreds gathered in the Rexburg Tabernacle Friday to pay tribute to honor those who have served in the military.

Local veterans took the stage, and several were recognized in the Rexburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s eighth annual veterans program.

The local veterans recognized each of our country’s wars. Local businesses, civic organizations, and service clubs provided wreaths to be presented during the program.

The Madison High School band performed at the event and played patriotic music. They also played war time hymns to honor specific armed service branches.

U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo talked about the men and women who have fought and continue to fight for our freedoms. He expressed appreciation to the families who support our heroes, and also reminded community members of prisoners of war and those who’ve not been able to return to their homes.

“Many big, important things are happening in America today and we face a lot of challenges,” Crapp said. “But with the strength of people like you, with the strength of our veterans and their families and our active military duty and personnel, we are going to prevail.”

U.S. Sen. James Risch was not able to attend the event, but a representative spoke on his behalf.

“Today Vicki and I pause to honor and to thank our veterans and their families for their service to America. Our nation has a moral and legal obligation to care for our veterans every day and to ensure all promises made to them by the federal government are fully honored. I remain committed to those goals,” according to Risch’s prepared statement.
