REXBURG — Chilean tenor Leon de la Guardia will perform an evening of Italian and Spanish love songs in the Barrus Concert Hall at Brigham Young University-Idaho on Wednesday, February 8, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Center Stage Performing Arts Series.

A native of Viña del Mar, Chile, he studied in his homeland before traveling to Europe to study under internationally respected masters in Barcelona, Vienna and Berlin. The tenor is captivating audiences across Europe.

In 2015 he made his debut at the Arena di Verona singing to an audience of 15,000 at the Ice Spectacular televised in Europe. In addition to being praised for his “passion and vocal timbre,” his fans call him the “coolest and hottest tenor” of his generation.

Since his professional debut in Spain, he has performed in renowned concert halls in Germany, Austria, Italy, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Spain, Romania and France. He has portrayed roles such as Bastian in Mozart’s “Bastian and Bastienne,” Arlecchino in Leoncavallo’s “I Pagliacci,” Crates in Etienne Niclas Mehul’s “Bion,” Rodolfo in Puccini’s “La Boheme,” Pinkerton in Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly,” and Ismael in Verdi’s “Nabucco.

He also recently performed at a concert in Santiago, Chile, with the distinguished Chilean soprano Cristina Gallardo Domas, and has sung sacred works such as Bruckner’s Te Deum and Ramirez’ Misa Criolla.

He is currently preparing his portrayal of Jesus of Nazareth in the world premiere of the “Via Crucis,” a work commissioned by the Cofradia del Santisimo Cristo Mutilado de Malaga, and composed by the young Spanish composer Arturo Diez Boscovich.

Tickets for the performance are $12 for the general public and $6 for BYU-Idaho students. They are available online at tickets.byui.edu or on school days from the University Store Ticket Office (496-3170).
