REXBURG — A Brigham Young University-Idaho was seriously injured after being hit by a car in a crosswalk Monday night.

Nicole Lee, 19, was crossing at South 2nd West and West 1st South in a marked crosswalk around 7:10 p.m. when she was hit by the car.

“The crosswalk had flashing crosswalk lights activated and the driver failed to see the lights or the girl,” Rexburg Police Capt. Randy Lewis says.

Lewis says Robert Whetten, 22, hit Lee with the 1998 Chevy pickup he was driving. She was taken to Madison Memorial Hospital after receiving a laceration to her head, a possible broken nose and leg injuries.

Whetten was issued a citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian within a crosswalk.

Lee has been released from the hospital, according to Lewis.
