UPDATE:
The Idaho Falls Police Department reports a suspicious package found in a United States Postal Service mailbox at Park Avenue and A Street Wednesday, Sept. 16 was not an explosive device.
Police spokeswoman Joelyn Hansen said the package – though it looked suspicious – was only a postal mailing box with a disposable camera duct taped to the outside of it, according to a news release.
According to investigators, the package was tracked to a mentally disabled man who misunderstood mailing regulations. Police do not believe there was any criminal intent.
The mailbox and package were detonated with the assistance of an Idaho Falls Regional Bomb Squad robot.
The area surrounding the suspicious package is safe and roads were re-opened in downtown Idaho Falls in the early evening.
