IDAHO FALLS — A winterlike storm is headed for eastern Idaho tonight.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the following counties: Clark, Fremont, western Madison, Teton, western Bonneville, Jefferson, Caribou, Bear Lake, Onieda, Bannock, Franklin and Power. These counties will see 5 to 10 inches of snow at the higher elevations and between 1 to 4 inches of snow in the valleys. The advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Compounding the snow — a high wind advisory also has been issued in eastern Idaho. Sustained winds of 35 to 45 mph are expected with gusts of 60 mph in the following cities: Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Idaho Falls,
Rexburg and Pocatello. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Areas of blowing dust are expected due to recent field plowing. Minor wind damage and sporadic power outages are possible.

Interstate 84 between Yale and the Utah State Line may experience even stronger winds.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Custer and Lemhi counties and southern Montana. Up to 12 inches of snow may fall in that area.

Similar weather advisories are in effect in northern Utah and western Wyoming.
