REXBURG – YouTube sensation Alex Boye performed a high-energy, fast-paced show to a packed crowd Friday night at the Brigham Young University-Idaho Hart Auditorium.
Before the concert, he spoke exclusively with EastIdahoNews.com and announced that he will soon be launching a weekly “trial-run” show at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Details are being worked out but Boye expects everything to be in place within six to eight months.
Millions came to know Boye this summer as a popular contestant on “America’s Got Talent.” He also performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on its recent U.S. tour.
While Boye has performed in Rexburg several times over the years, this was his first full-blown solo concert with his own band.
The popular singer is known for “Africanizing” the pop landscape, infusing explosive rhythms and various languages into his music. His YouTube channel has more than 130 million views.
Embracing his rich heritage after years of successful recordings as a gospel artist, the London-born, Utah-based vocal powerhouse is having a breakthrough year as a mainstream pop artist, scoring over 63 million views for “Let It Go” and another 35 million views for “Peponi,” the “Africanized” version of Coldplay’s “Paradise” with ThePianoGuys; and most recently with the runaway viral hit cover of Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” which has garnered over 3 million views in just five days.
Boye performed one hit after another Friday during his two-and-a-half hour show. He passionately shared his joy for music and his mission of lifting others through song. At one point, he became emotional sharing his personal story of being kicked out of his parents home at age 16 after he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Boye launched his professional career in 1995 as the lead singer of the European boy band Awesome. The band performed at local dances and other small venues until 1996 when they won a vocal competition on Capitol Radio, London’s largest radio station. Awesome signed to Universal Records Europe and released three singles from their debut album Rumors which made the Top Ten on various pop charts throughout Europe. Selling over half a million CDs, they performed shows alongside numerous superstars, including Bryan Adams, The Backstreet Boys, George Michael, Simon and Garfunkel and MC Hammer.
