AMERICAN FALLS — A father is dead but his son survived after their boat hit a rock in the Snake River on Saturday afternoon.

The Power County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as 79-year-old Willard D. Cranney from Burley.

Authorities said Cranney and his son were operating their boat on the Snake River near the Pipeline boat launch southwest of American Falls when they struck the rock around 2 p.m.

Both Cranney and his son were ejected from the boat upon impact with the rock. Nearby boaters got both men out of the water and tried to revive Cranney. Power County Emergency Medical Services along with sheriff’s deputies and local police also responded.

The Sheriff’s Office reported: “Despite the heroic efforts of the people that pulled the man out of the river and the efforts of the Power County EMS the man died on the scene.”

Authorities said Cranney’s son, whose name has not been released, survived without suffering any injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that neither Cranney nor his son was wearing a life jacket.
