LEWISTON, Utah — A violent car accident in Lewiston, Utah, June 1, involved three Preston residents and claimed the life of Ronda Alder, 52.
Alder and her husband, Kraig, were traveling eastbound on 1600 South, at about 7 p.m., when their Dodge Dakota truck was hit broadside by a 2001 Ford 250 driven by Samuel Cann, 20, who was northbound and did not stop at the stop sign at the intersection.
Utah Highway Patrolman Cade Brenchley told the Preston Citizen both vehicles were traveling at about 50 miles per hour. The collision, which impacted the passenger side of the Dodge, caused the Dakota to roll onto its top. No one was wearing a seatbelt.
Ronda, who was in the passenger seat, did not have a pulse at the scene. Brandy Gillespie, a probation officer in the area, “gave a valiant effort” in performing CPR, and was able to revive Ronda, with the help of bystander John Dent. Ronda was transported to the Cache Valley Hospital with her husband. She perished from her injuries later in the evening.
Cann was transported to Logan Regional Hospital. The two men sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Brenchley said excessive speed and impairment have been ruled out, but the crash is still under investigation and citations are pending.
“He’s not the type to drink or use drugs … or techie,” said Brenchley. Fatigue or distraction may be factors, he said. Cann had just finished a 12-hour shift at his job and was returning home.
