The following is a news release from the American Red Cross of Idaho and Montana.

IDAHO FALLS – On Saturday, October 17th, the American Red Cross of Greater Idaho, the Idaho Falls Fire Department, Melaleuca, Servpro, Home Depot, WestOne Logistics, Bank of Idaho, Paul Davis Restoration, Boys Scouts of America and others will help improve fire safety in Idaho Falls. Going door-to-door in our most at-risk neighborhoods, volunteer will install free smoke alarms, help residents develop fire escape plans and share other important fire safety information.

“Every year we have home fires in our community that devastate families,” says Rusty Devereaux, Disaster Program Manager for the Red Cross of Greater Idaho. “One of the best ways to improve fire safety at home is to make sure you have working smoke alarms, to have an escape plan and to practice that plan with your family. This Saturday, our volunteers will make sure we reach as many people as possible with our home fire prevention program.”

The coalition plans to install at least 300 free smoke alarms in Idaho Falls. On-site training and tools will be provided, and all participants will undergo a background check before joining the program.

There is still time to sign up to join this lifesaving effort:

Sign up here. To sign up by phone, please call 1-208-497-3231 and ask for Rusty Devereaux or leave a message. Questions? Please email rusty.devereaux@redcross.org.

Participating volunteers should plan to meet at following times and location:

Date: Saturday, October 17th
Time: 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: Idaho Falls Fire Station (Downtown), 647 Shoup Avenue
