Riverwalk along Idaho Falls Greenbelt nearing completion

IDAHO FALLS — A major project along River Parkway near Broadway will bring some big changes to the Idaho Falls Greenbelt.

The facelift will take what used to be a 6-foot-wide riverwalk and make it close to 16 feet wide.

City leaders hope the $850,000 change will make this section of the greenbelt more attractive.

“To upgrade it will only improve it and I think it’s a great idea,” said Joseph Peabody of Idaho Falls.

The project is being paid for with local, state and federal grants, the Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation Department said, and extra grant money has allowed construction to begin sooner than planned.

“The Idaho Transportation Department actually programmed this project to be done next year,” Assistant Public Works Director Chris Canfield said. “Because of available funding, we are able to move forward with the project this fall.”

Officials hope the riverwalk will be ready for use in about six to eight weeks with final touches being added next spring.

Guardrails are also being added to the bridge walk making it safer for pedestrians.

“It’s going to be a lot nicer once it gets completed so I can live with the inconvenience for the short time,” resident Phil Poole said.
