IDAHO FALLS – Tri-County officers are currently investigating the apparent suicide of accused murderer Brian Mitchell.

Deputies found Mitchell, 18, dead in his cell at the Bonneville County Jail around 2 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. Family members tell EastIdahoNews.com he committed suicide.

In a news release sent to EastIdahoNews.com Monday, Sgt. Bryan Lovell, a spokesman for the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, says investigators are gathering and analyzing information provided by jail staff and deputies on duty at the time of the incident.

“This includes an autopsy and any necessary medical information from the deceased that pertains to the investigation,” Lovell said. “As soon as their investigation is complete, we will have an official report of their findings.”

Lovell says jail staff did not have any indication of a problem prior to the discovery of Mitchell’s body.

Mitchell had been in the facility since Aug. 20. The Shelley teenager was facing a second-degree murder charge after police say he stabbed 31-year-old Deraek Larson in Tautphaus Park on Sunday, Aug. 16.
