POCATELLO — A man was arrested for driving under the influence after he drove into a power pole late Tuesday, Dec. 15, Pocatello police said.

Sean Francis Cox, 42, of Idaho Falls, exited the Interstate 15 off-ramp onto Clark Street at a high speed. Several witnesses told police Cox was driving recklessly.

At the intersection of 18th Avenue and Clark Street, Cox drove his vehicle onto a sidewalk and hit a power pole, knocking it down.

Cox got out of his car and ran away from the crash, police said. Officers later picked him up after witnesses identified him.

“He was obviously inebriated, and officers could smell the odor of intoxicating beverages on his person,” police spokeswoman Dianne Brush said.

He was taken to Portneuf Medical Center for treatment for the crash. He was then booked into the Bannock County Jail.

This was Cox’s first DUI charge. He was being held on an $800 bond Wednesday.

The accident caused $250 in damage to the power pole, which is owned by Idaho Power, Brush said.
