Investigation clears jail deputies in Brian Mitchell suicide

IDAHO FALLS — Murder defendant Brian Mitchell took his own life, and jail deputies were not at fault, according to documents released Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Mitchell, 18, was in the Bonneville County Jail and faced a second-degree murder charge after police say he stabbed 31-year-old Deraek Larson to death in Tautphaus Park on Sunday, Aug. 16.

Mitchell’s death was investigated by Tri County investigators from Bingham and Madison counties, and their results were turned over to Bonneville County Prosecuting Attorney Daniel R. Clark.

According to the investigation, there were no previous indications Mitchell was suicidal. In a letter to Bonneville County Sheriff Paul J. Wilde, Clark said Mitchell appears to have hanged himself on the stitching from jail-issued sheets.

“At this time I do not see any level of culpability by any deputy or inmate at the Bonneville County Jail,” Clark wrote.
