REXBURG — Madison County Sheriff Roy Klingler announced Friday morning that he will be retiring at the end of the year.
During a news conference at the Madison County Courthouse, Klingler said this will be his last term in office. He was elected in 2001 after serving as an officer in the Rexburg Police Department.
“Having the opportunity to serve as sheriff has been greater than anything,” an emotional Klinger said. “My wife and family have been so supportive.”
Klinger also announced he is endorsing Capt. Cameron Stanford as his successor. Stanford, who also announced his candidacy at the meeting, currently oversees the criminal division of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, according to the office website.
“I know Cameron will make a great sheriff,” Klinger said.
On a recently launched campaign website, Stanford writes, “I bring the opportunities and experiences I have gained from working alongside Sheriff Klingler and I will add that knowledge to my own views and ideas when I am elected your sheriff.”
