IDAHO FALLS — After a BB was shot through a school bus window Friday, Nov. 13, authorities were able to pinpoint the location of the suspect by viewing surveillance footage captured by bus cameras.
Bonneville County Sheriff Sgt. Bryan Lovell said investigators examined video from interior and exterior cameras to determine where the shot came from.
“Detectives went door to door and counted fence panels until they got to the backyard of the house,” Lovell said.
Lovell said the shooter was identified as a 17-year-old Hillcrest High School student. He was arrested on two counts of misdemeanor malicious injury to property and two counts of felony shooting at an occupied vehicle.
Authorities have not said what the suspect’s motivation was for shooting the buses.
John Pymm, Safety Operations director for Bonneville Joint School District 93, confirmed two buses were shot at. One of the buses was carrying three special needs students.
After the shot was fired, the driver of the special needs bus called and reported the shattered window; then pulled over and made sure the students were safe, District 93 officials said.
“We had made arrangements to have those students put on another bus,” Pymm said. “We do this because, if we have shattered glass on a bus, we don’t use (the bus).”
After speaking with a several students Pymm said they didn’t seem too troubled.
“Their attitudes seemed to be really positive,” Pymm said. “I spoke with a couple of the students and in each case they were smiling and feeling safe.”
EastIdahoNews.com reached out to the families of students on the bus, but they did not return calls Monday.
The district will continue to train bus drivers and take precaution to ensure students safety, officials said.
